5 Things You Must Do With Your Puppy | Essential Puppy Training Tips
5 Things You Must Do With Your Puppy (That Set Them Up for Success)
The first few months with a puppy shape everything—from potty habits to how they behave around guests. Training doesn’t have to be overwhelming, but it does need structure.
If you focus on these five essentials early, you’ll avoid most common puppy problems before they even start.
1. Combine Potty Training and Crate Training From Day One
Potty training works best when it’s paired with crate training. The crate helps your puppy learn bladder control and prevents accidents when you can’t supervise.
What to focus on:
-
Use the crate during naps, overnight, and short absences
-
Take your puppy out immediately after crate time
-
Keep a consistent potty schedule (morning, meals, play, bedtime)
-
Reward after your puppy finishes going potty outside
-
Supervise closely when your puppy is out of the crate
When used correctly, the crate speeds up potty training and creates structure—not stress.
If you have a backyard: I like to potty my dogs outdoors on cement in a playpen if possible. Make sure it is a sanitized area where other animals don't go (squirrels, cats, etc). I like using WYSIWASH to spray and sanitize the area for unvaccinated puppies. This helps you skip the step of transitioning from potty pads to straight to going outside.
If you don't have a backyard (apartment people): For potty pads, I would bring the dog to the same spot every time after they are out of the crate, and reward either with a treat or play time afterwards.

2. Train Using Kibble to Build Focus and Engagement
Your puppy doesn’t need endless treats. Using their daily food for training builds engagement while preventing overfeeding.
What to focus on:
-
Hand-feed meals during training sessions
-
Reward attention, calm behavior, and following you
-
Use kibble for simple skills and treats for distractions
-
Train before meals to increase motivation
-
Keep sessions short and positive
This teaches your puppy that you are valuable, not just the food.
3. Socialize Your Puppy the Right Way
Socialization isn’t about saying hello to everyone—it’s about teaching your puppy how to stay calm and confident in new situations.
What to focus on:
-
Expose your puppy to new environments, sounds, and surfaces
-
Reward calm observation instead of pulling or jumping
-
Avoid overwhelming situations early on
-
Keep experiences short and positive
-
Focus on neutrality, not constant interaction
Proper socialization reduces fear, anxiety, and over-excitement later in life.
4. Use a Leash Indoors for In-Home Management
An indoor leash is one of the most underrated puppy tools. It helps prevent bad habits before they form.
What to focus on:
-
Keep a lightweight leash on your puppy indoors
-
Redirect instead of chasing when they get into trouble
-
Prevent jumping, nipping, and counter surfing early
-
Reduce unwanted freedom until your puppy earns it
Management isn’t punishment—it’s setting your puppy up to succeed.
5. Manage Guests Instead of Letting Chaos Happen
Most puppy behavior issues show up when guests arrive. Without a plan, excitement quickly turns into jumping, barking, or nipping.
What to focus on:
-
Put your puppy on leash before opening the door
-
Reward calm behavior before greetings happen
-
TELL YOUR GUESTS TO IGNORE YOUR PUPPY
-
Increase exposure slowly as your puppy matures
Teaching calm guest greetings early prevents lifelong bad habits.
Final Thoughts: Structure Now = Freedom Later
Puppies don’t need perfection—they need guidance.
By combining potty and crate training, using food properly, socializing intentionally, managing your puppy indoors, and setting rules around guests, you’ll raise a dog that’s calm, confident, and easy to live with.
If you ever feel stuck, early support makes everything easier down the road.
